As St Nic’s Musicians we are inspired, expressive and creative
At St Nicholas C of E Primary School, we believe that music is a powerful and enriching part of every child's education. Through our ambitious, inclusive and progressive music curriculum, pupils develop their musical knowledge, skills and understanding whilst building confidence, creativity and self-expression. Music provides opportunities for children to communicate, collaborate and explore the world around them through sound, performance and composition.
Our music curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision to Aim High, Be Courageous and Show Love. We encourage children to aim high by developing their musical skills and striving to achieve their personal best. They are courageous when performing, sharing ideas and expressing themselves creatively. Through listening to and appreciating music from a wide range of cultures, genres and traditions, pupils develop respect for others and learn to show love through collaboration, empathy and shared experiences.
Music is a key part of our distinctive St Nic's Journey and our Arts and Culture pillar. We want every child to develop a lifelong appreciation of music and to understand the important role it plays in communities and cultures around the world. Through singing, listening, performing, composing and evaluating, children are exposed to a wide range of musical experiences that enrich their cultural capital and broaden their understanding of the arts.
At the heart of our curriculum is the identity of the St Nic's Musician:
As St Nic's Musicians, we are inspired, we are expressive and we are creative.
Through our carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils build on prior learning and develop an increasingly secure understanding of musical concepts, vocabulary and techniques. Using the Kapow Primary Music Scheme, children progressively develop their knowledge and skills from the Early Years through to Key Stage 2, ensuring strong foundations for future musical learning.
Music provides a valuable opportunity for self-expression and personal growth. We encourage children to share their ideas, perform with confidence and celebrate their individuality through music-making. Whether singing, playing instruments, composing or responding to music, every child is supported to develop their own musical voice.
At St Nicholas, we want every child to leave primary school with a love and appreciation of music, confidence in their own musical abilities and an understanding of the rich and diverse world of music. Through inspiring experiences and high-quality teaching, we nurture children who are creative, expressive and enthusiastic musicians.
The National Curriculum for Music aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
- Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
