As St Nic’s Geographers we wonder, we are curious and we explore
At St Nicholas C of E Primary School, we believe geography should inspire pupils to be curious about the world around them and their place within it. Through our broad, ambitious and inclusive curriculum, children develop a secure understanding of places, people, environments and the Earth's physical and human processes. We aim to nurture knowledgeable, responsible and compassionate global citizens who are prepared to engage with the opportunities and challenges of an ever-changing world.
Our geography curriculum helps children explore local, national and global communities while developing an understanding of sustainability, environmental responsibility and cultural diversity. As pupils progress through school, they build knowledge of how physical and human processes shape the world and how places are connected across different scales.
A meaningful thread throughout our curriculum is the study of our local area. Starting with their immediate surroundings, children use Kenilworth and the surrounding area as a context for fieldwork, observation, enquiry and comparison. These experiences help pupils deepen their geographical understanding, strengthen their fieldwork skills and appreciate how their local community connects to the wider world.
Through enquiry-based learning and practical fieldwork, pupils develop essential geographical skills, including map reading, data collection, interpretation and analysis. We want every child to leave St Nicholas with a sense of wonder about the world, a strong understanding of their local area and the confidence to be active, informed and responsible global citizens who live out our vision to Aim High, Be Courageous and Show Love.
The National Curriculum for Geography Aims to Ensure that All Pupils:
- Develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places - both terrestrial and marine - including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes
- Understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time
- Are competent in the geographical skills needed to:
- Collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes
- Interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
- Communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length
