OPAL at St Nics

At St Nicholas CE Primary School, our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme supports our vision to Show Love, Aim High and Be Courageous. Through high-quality play opportunities, we create an inclusive, exciting and stimulating environment where every child can thrive.

We believe that play is essential for children's physical, emotional, social and cognitive development. OPAL transforms playtimes by giving children opportunities to explore, create, collaborate, solve problems, take appropriate risks and develop independence through child-led play.

Our children enjoy a wide range of play experiences including imaginative play, den building, construction, creative activities, sports, loose parts play, quiet spaces and outdoor exploration. These experiences help develop confidence, resilience, communication skills and positive relationships.

At St Nicholas, we follow a balanced risk-benefit approach, helping children learn to assess and manage risk safely while building confidence, resilience and important life skills. We also recognise every child's right to play and are committed to ensuring our provision is inclusive and accessible for all children, including those with SEND.

Through OPAL, children develop important oracy skills by talking, listening, negotiating, collaborating and problem-solving during play, helping them become confident communicators both in and beyond the classroom

Our aim:

To provide amazing playtimes every day, enabling children to be happy, healthy, active, creative and ready to learn.

Inclusion for Every Child:

At St Nicholas, OPAL is for everyone. We create inclusive play opportunities that enable all children, including those with SEND, to access meaningful and enjoyable play experiences. Through a range of active, creative, social and sensory opportunities, every child can find a place to belong, play and thrive.

Wellbeing through play:

Outdoor play supports children's physical health, emotional wellbeing and resilience. Through OPAL, children have opportunities to be active, build friendships, solve problems, manage emotions and develop confidence in a safe and supportive environment.

Developing Communication and Oracy:

Play provides rich opportunities for children to talk, listen, negotiate, collaborate and solve problems. Through imaginative and cooperative play, children develop the communication skills that support learning across the curriculum and throughout life.

Working in Partnership with Families:

We believe that parents and carers are important partners in our OPAL journey. We regularly share updates, welcome feedback and greatly appreciate donations of loose parts and recycled materials that enrich children's play experiences.

By working together, we can create exciting opportunities that help children thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will my child get muddy?
Sometimes! Active outdoor play is an important part of OPAL. We ask families to provide suitable clothing and footwear so children can enjoy play in all seasons.

Is OPAL safe?
Yes. Play areas are supervised by trained staff who use a balanced risk-benefit approach. This allows children to experience appropriate challenge while learning how to manage risk safely.

Why do children use loose parts?
Loose parts such as crates, tubing, tyres and fabric encourage creativity, teamwork, problem-solving and imaginative play. Children can use them in many different ways, helping to develop independence and innovation.

How can families support OPAL?
Families can support OPAL by donating suitable resources, encouraging outdoor play at home and helping children come to school dressed appropriately for outdoor play.
